Yankees Settle for Doubleheader Split With Rangers

Corey Seager hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run sixth inning as the visiting Texas Rangers capitalized on Gerrit Cole’s departure and beat the New York Yankees 9-4 to salvage the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.

New York won the opener 8-0 behind four RBIs from Austin Wells, but the latter game turned significantly for the Rangers after Cole was lifted following the first out of the sixth inning at 90 pitches with the score tied 1-1.

Cole In the span of about six and a half hours, the Yankees showed flashes of the peak of their powers, a team that could out-talent others all the way to the World Series.
And flashes of what could go wrong along the way for a club that still has holes.

An 8-0 win backed by Austin Wells, Aaron Judge and Carlos Rodon, followed by an ugly 9-4 loss to the Rangers that included a five-run, sixth-inning implosion, amounted to a doubleheader split in front of 41,996 in The Bronx for the Yankees (69-49), who have won nine of 13 and generally righted themselves after a lengthy malaise.

Seattle Mariners Shut Out New York Mets 4-0

The Mets were shut out for the second straight night in Seattle, recording just four hits in a 4-0 loss to the Mariners. It’s the first time NY has been shut out in back-to-back games this season.
New York (61-56) began the day 0.5 games ahead of Atlanta for the final Wild Card spot, but the Braves snapped their six-game losing streak and are now 0.5 games up on the Mets.

New York’s bats struggled against Mariners starter Logan Gilbert all night long. Francisco Lindor opened the game with a single, but Gilbert then retired the next eight straight Mets through the third.
Gilbert made it nine in a row when Lindor lined out to open the fourth before Brandon Nimmo walked to give NY their second baserunner of the night. J.D. Martinez and Pete Alonso couldn’t make anything happen and the Mets’ scoreless stretch continued.

Aaron Judge Leads Yankees

Aaron Judge’s two-run home run in the first inning of the Yankees’ 8-3 win over the Blue Jays in the Bronx tied him with the Bambino for a nearly century-old franchise record.
Judge now boasts 16 first-inning home runs this season, matching the number Ruth hit in the opening frame of his famous 60-homer campaign in 1927.
Only Alex Rodriguez, who hit 18 first-inning home runs with Texas in 2001, and Mark McGwire, who hit 17 with St. Louis two years earlier, struck more in a single season in MLB history.
Judge’s 426-foot blast against Toronto’s José Berríos gave the Yankees (66-46) an early 2-1 advantage Saturday, and they led the rest of the way.
It was Judge’s MLB-leading 41st home run of the season, putting him on pace for 59. Judge had 45 home runs through the Yankees’ 112th game of 2022, when he set an American League single-season record with 62.

Ex-Knick $60 Million Contract With Pacers

Obi Toppin is staying in Indianapolis.
A year after being traded by the Knicks, the forward is re-signing with the Pacers on a four-year, $60 million contract.
The 26-year-old, whom the Knicks took No. 8 overall out of Dayton in the 2020 NBA Draft, made waves with his high-flying dunks during his three years at the Garden, but he was stuck playing limited minutes behind Julius Randle.
Still mostly coming off the bench for the Pacers, he carved out a bigger role with 21 minutes a game and set career highs with 10.3 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, field-goal percentage (57.3) and 3-point percentage (40.3).
He averaged 9.9 points and 3.3 rebounds during the Pacers seven-game second-round win against the Knicks.
For the postseason, which ended with a conference final sweep at the hands of the eventual-champion Celtics, Toppin averaged 10.9 points and 4.4 rebounds a game while shooting 54.1 percent from the field.

McDonald’s Making Changes To Their Menu

McDonald’s is planning a major overhaul to its burgers, including its signature entree, the Big Mac, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The global fast food chain plans to rollout what it calls its “best burgers ever,” putting a focus on correcting dry patties and squishy buns. The changes will include the following:
- Six patties grilled at a time instead of eight to have its auto-cooking mechanism apply less pressure and retain more burger patty juices
- More sauce on Big Macs
- Addition of thicker, buttery brioche buns to retain heat
- Sesame seeds more randomly scattered on buns
- Cheese taken out of refrigerators sooner to melt more when cooked
- Onions rehydrated after purchase to provide more juiciness
- Lettuce and pickles stored in smaller containers to be refreshed more often.
The changes were initially introduced at select international markets including Australia, Canada and Belgium and have since been rolled out in several West Coast cities including Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver, Boise and Tucson, among others, with plans to go nationwide by 2024.

Mets Slug Five Homers, Complete Subway Series Sweep of Yankees

The Mets humiliated the Yankees, 12-3, in the series finale between the two teams in The Bronx to secure just the second Subway Series sweep in club history. Francisco Lindor hit two of the Mets’ five home runs, and Pete Alonso, Tyrone Taylor and Mark Vientos mashed one apiece.

The Mets went 4-0 against their city rivals this year, the first time they swept the Yanks in a season series since they won all four games against them in 2013. This season, the Mets outscored the Yankees, 36-14.
Overall, the Mets are 66-80 against the Yankees in the regular season. If you add in other games – the 2000 World Series, spring training, the old Mayor’s Trophy Game, et cetera, the Mets are 114-150-2 all-time against the Yanks.
An announced crowd of 48,760 was at the game, the highest-paid attendance at Yankee Stadium this season.

Knicks Sign OG Anunoby To Five-Year Deal

OG Anunoby is coming back to the Knicks on a megadeal. The forward agreed to a five-year contract worth $212.5 million that includes a player option for the final season.
Anunoby, 26, carried heavy leverage into the negotiations and clearly flexed it before agreeing to the biggest contract in franchise history.
The total sum and average salaries destroyed the previous Knicks record, set by Carmelo Anthony and Julius Randle.
Concern about Anunoby’s extensive injury history are real. He hasn’t reached 70 games since his rookie campaign in 2017-18.
He didn’t exceed 50 games in three of the last four seasons, missing 27 with the Knicks last season because of an elbow injury that required surgery.

Anunoby then strained his hamstring in the playoffs and sat most of the second round, which ended with the Knicks falling in seven games to the Pacers.
Barring another seismic trade before the season starts, the Knicks’ lineup will include Anunoby, Bridges, Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle — a foursome built for championship contention.
